Day 14 World Diabetes Awareness Day. |
I have diabetes. I have been diagnosed for less than a year. I am lucky, mine was caught early and is controlled with the smallest amount of glyburide and diet. At this point I have no complications.
But, many people with diabetes are not so lucky. They have severe problems with controlling it or they have complications from years of too high blood glucose. Or diabetes that is entirely undiagnosed.
There are 2 types of diabetes, called type 1 and type 2. People with type 1 have to have insulin injections as their body doesn't produce insulin. People with type 2 maybe on insulin, medications, or diet alone. Some type 2ers have little insulin and others have too much insulin but are resistant to it.
I have type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. I have been insulin resistant for a long time (that is a major part of polycystic ovarian syndrome, which I also have) but had not gone into full fledged diabetes until last year.
Diabetes is a controllable if you work at it but, it is still a harmful disease. Diabetics die younger and have more heart problems. We need a cure for this disease but, at this time it is more profitable for companies to develop new drugs to control it instead of curing it.
Some symptoms to watch for:
- Excessive thirst
- Extreme hunger
- Unusual weight loss
- Increased fatigue
- Irritability
- Blurry vision
- Excessive urination
If you experience any of these go to your doctor as soon as you can. The sooner you are diagnosed the better off you will be.
What I did today was wrote my Senators and Representatives urging them to spend more money on diabetes research. Someday we can have a cure, then it's real full sugar ice cream for everyone. |
