Yes, a lot of that is blood. And, the open space is where the stitches popped. The incision is only about 2.5 or 3 inches long but, the foot is peeled back so that they can get to all the bone and tendons. Plus, afterward, a bunch of holes were poked in my achiless tendon. 
Ew.
